I have been trying to locate different tutorials and whatever other materials I can to expand my knowledge of photography. I have a pretty good handle on the basic art foundations, but there is always something else to know. It seems like the more I learn, the more I realize that I have so much more to go.
I found a website called digital-photography-school.com and I have been very impressed with the tutorials available there. There are also weekly assignments to practice different techniques. I have been going through them and trying them out. The one that I tried this week was panning. The idea is to get the subject relatively in focus, and the background blurry to show movement. I was practicing on my 3 year old son Lucas on the slide in our backyard. It's simple in theory, however in technique its a little more difficult. As you can see there is still room for improvement. This isn't a skill I will use in baby portraits, but possibly in children's depending upon the location.
I'm looking forward to trying many more assignments and further expanding my knowledge base.
